We had some fun back then at the station. I was more concerned about the music, and what not, than my broadcasting skills. Did a stint on the WEBN broadcast workshop in Cincinnati from 88-90. They would put us on at 4 am. I have thought about revamping my broadcasting career lately. One night at the old station I had one of my infamous gatherings and we got rowdy, cranking up some DIO really loud, and an NLU Police Officer opened the door and I was standing on top of the mgrs. desk banging my head and going wild. The older gentleman, a real nice guy as I remember, looked at me wide-eyed, turned while shaking his head and politely closed the door behind him and left.

Wow, it is hard to believe so much time has passed, and in some ways it only seems like a handful of years ago. I think I was actually one of the few KNLU staff that was not a radio-television-film major, and I only worked the Saturday night late shift until sign-off, which I recall was from 10pm to 1am. During my college years I typically worked graveyard shift jobs, so with that combination and my KNLU shift I actually seldom saw anyone else on the KNLU staff except for whoever I was relieving or at the rare staff meetings at the beginning and end of the semester. But I really had a great time working there and learned a lot about broadcasting. I was exposed to a lot of new music and always had an interest in audio electronics, etc so it was just a general blast. ...except for those darned early generation Denon CD carts that would overheat and just refuse to play another CD! Hah. And it was sometimes a little creepy and moody being in the darkened studio and building all by myself around midnight, only lit with an old lamp some past DJ had left and the AP teletype buzzing in the next room, but I never felt totally alone playing music and talking to my listeners. There were the occasional "dead air featuring silence" moments and times when I went off the reservation and worked in a little Monty Python, some B-side not on the heavy-rotation list, or my own made up trivia contest ...."What famous actor's brother sings, 'No Myth'" ....but it was all in good fun. Some from this era may remember my awful "radio police" bits. What can I say, I was 21 years old. At least the staff gave me a squirt gun and certificate at our close of the semester staff meeting in commemoration! And who remembers the "lounge" next to the studio, decorated in all its glory with worn out couches and plastered with ratty band posters and promo material? I placed a Depeche Mode "fan" I brought back from the Violator tour in there, only to have it disappear. Ah well. And what about the "so dead they should be buried" record stacks? There actually were some great treasures in those shelves ideal for spinning at nearly 1am in the morning. Great memories.

It 's been almost 5 years since I updated this. In touch with a bunch of KNLU people over on Facebook. Come join us, you know you want to. I received my teaching certificate but am having a tough time receiving a job. There is a glut of history teachers up here in New England. I will continue to sub because the kids are just so sweet and hard working. I'm still married with 0 children but I have a wicked (yeah, wicked is a RI thing, it is the equivalent of today's kids saying "mad" as in, "it is mad cold out right now") lot of house plants. Here's a request, play The Smiths "How Soon Is Now."

It's been almost 3 years since my last post and figure it was time for an update. I survived Hurricane Katrina and a few other storms that year. Still working at Providence Hospital. I was glad to see ULM beat Alabama last fall. Everyone working at the station now, keep up the great work, Someone in Mobile is listening!
